A group from JCI Portsmouth visited our local charity to find out a little more about them and what they do. We met with Jess, who gave us a guided tour of their new purpose-built centre in Fareham. Over a cup of coffee, she explained a little more about what The Rainbow Centre does and how volunteers can help.

The charity has come a long way since it's beginnings 20 years ago. Originally they were based in a small space above a shop and have grown and developed over the years, now occupying a purpose-built facility which really meets their needs.

We saw a 'Saturday Club' in full swing. Saturday clubs are designed to give additional support outside of the working week and are aimed at  help children who are already going to school. This extra support helps to continue their development and learning to achieve greater independence.
We saw one of the 'Conductors' carrying out Conductive Education with a small group of three children and their parents. CE is concerned with the development of the child as a whole. The routine includes several series of tasks carried out in different positions. For example, lying, sitting and standing-walking positions. Skills that are learned in these various positions will be applied in activities throughout the day and in their everyday lives. The programme also provides opportunities to develop age-appropriate cognitive, social and emotional skill.

The group plays an important part in the development of the personality and social skills of the child and also provides motivation for them. Children/adults learn from each other, support and encourage each other. Everyone within the group receives individual attention.

After a look around the centre and seeing the fantastic work that goes on, we spoke with Jess about what else the charity needs and how JCI can help further. We’ve got loads of ideas for future events including fundraising at Portsmouth Football Club and volunteering at Rainbow’s new charity shop – opening soon!
